62733%5C%2Fabstract%5C%2FEB84F7468A9A425BPQ%5C%2F1%26lt%3B%5C%2Fa%26gt%3B%26lt%3B%5C%2Fdiv%26gt%3B%5Cn%26lt%3B%5C%2Fdiv%26gt%3B%22%2C%22data%22%3A%7B%22itemType%22%3A%22thesis%22%2C%22title%22%3A%22Chaos%20in%20Music%3A%20Historical%20Developments%20and%20Applications%20to%20Music%20Theory%20and%20Composition%22%2C%22creators%22%3A%5B%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Jonathan%20R.%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Salter%22%7D%5D%2C%22abstractNote%22%3A%22A%20butterfly%20flaps%20its%20wings%20in%20Brazil%2C%20and%20a%20month%20later%20tornadoes%20ravage%20Oklahoma.%20A%20split%20second%20decision%20as%20a%20traffic%20light%20turns%20yellow%20causes%20you%20to%20miss%20the%20accident%20you%20would%20have%20been%20in%20if%20instead%20you%20had%20zoomed%20through%20the%20light.%20Gavrilo%20Princip%20pulls%20his%20trigger%2C%20shooting%20Archduke%20Ferdinand%20in%201914.%20This%20one%20little%20motion%20of%20a%20single%20finger%20sparks%20a%20series%20of%20events%20which%20leads%20to%20a%20war%20that%20rages%20across%20Europe%20and%20changes%20the%20course%20of%20history%20for%20the%20rest%20of%20the%2020th%20century.%20There%20are%20a%20wide%20variety%20of%20small%20decisions%20we%20make%20on%20a%20daily%20basis%3B%20we%20are%20all%20familiar%20with%20the%20immense%20consequences%20these%20seemingly%20insignificant%20decisions%20can%20have.%20This%20is%20one%20of%20the%20most%20basic%20ways%20in%20which%20we%20interact%20with%20chaos%20in%20our%20everyday%20lives.%5CnThe%20modern%20sense%20of%20the%20word%20chaos%20is%20informally%20used%20to%20indicate%20the%20absence%20of%20order.%20It%20is%20then%20somewhat%20of%20a%20misnomer%20that%20modern%20science%20uses%20this%20term%20to%20describe%20what%20is%20known%20as%20chaos%20theory%2C%20since%20the%20scientific%20use%20of%20chaos%20is%20entirely%20deterministic%3B%20that%20is%2C%20once%20the%20initial%20conditions%20of%20a%20chaotic%20system%20are%20known%2C%20all%20of%20the%20future%20states%20can%20be%20predicted%3B%20this%20is%20hardly%20the%20absence%20of%20order.%20It%20is%20the%20inability%20to%20measure%20and%20know%20all%20of%20the%20initial%20conditions%20for%20any%20system%20that%20makes%20a%20potentially%20deterministic%20universe%20so%20unpredictable.%5CnChaos%20theory%2C%20the%20study%20of%20nonlinear%20dynamical%20systems%2C%20is%20not%20a%20%26quot%3Btheory%26quot%3B%20in%20the%20sense%20that%20it%20is%20an%20unproven%20hypothesis%2C%20but%20rather%20that%20it%20is%20a%20cohesive%20group%20of%20ideas%20which%20fall%20under%20a%20single%20designation.%20The%20various%20ideas%20and%20techniques%20which%20fall%20under%20the%20label%20of%20chaos%20theory%20are%20not%20intended%20for%20any%20particular%20area%20of%20science.%20Like%20algebra%20or%20calculus%2C%20chaos%20theory%20involves%20the%20study%20of%20universal%20mathematical%20systems%20which%20match%20a%20certain%20set%20of%20criteria%20and%20exhibit%20certain%20behaviors.%20The%20application%20of%20chaos%20theory%20is%20wide-ranging%2C%20providing%20results%20that%20range%20from%20mathematics%2C%20physics%2C%20biology%2C%20chemistry%2C%20astronomy%2C%20physiology%2C%20sociology%2C%20psychology%2C%20even%20art%20and%20music%2C%20and%20can%20be%20found%20in%20many%20of%20the%20most%20accurate%20mathematical%20models%20of%20natural%20phenomenon.%20In%20other%20words%2C%20chaos%20theory%20analyzes%20the%20complexity%20that%20underlies%20our%20universe%20and%20all%20of%20its%20parts.%20Isaac%20McPhee%20sums%20up%20the%20role%20of%20chaos%20theory%20as%20%26quot%3Bnot%20a%20specific%20genre%20of%20mathematics%20as%20much%20as%20it%20is%20a%20statement%20of%20the%20limitations%20of%20human%20knowledge.%5Cu201d1%5CnWith%20the%20widespread%20application%20of%20chaos%20theory%20and%20its%20implications%20throughout%20the%20scholarly%20community%2C%20it%20is%20necessarily%20beyond%20the%20scope%20of%20this%20document%20to%20outline%20every%20application%20of%20chaos%20theory%2C%20even%20when%20limited%20to%20musical%20applications.%20This%20document%20is%20not%20intended%20to%20serve%20as%20a%20comprehensive%20summary%20of%20all%20of%20the%20research%20into%20chaos%20theory%20and%20music%2C%20but%20instead%20is%20focused%20on%20three%20primary%20goals%3A%20%281%29%20To%20provide%20a%20common%20background%20for%20musicians%20and%20mathematicians%20in%20order%20to%20foster%20interdisciplinary%20communication%3B%20%282%29%20To%20show%20examples%20of%20the%20application%20of%20chaos%20theory%20to%20musical%20issues%3B%20%283%29%20To%20provide%20a%20toolbox%20for%20the%20incorporation%20of%20chaotic%20principles%20to%20music%20composition.%5CnPart%20I%20will%20be%20concerned%20with%20the%20development%20of%20chaos%20theory%20as%20well%20as%20the%20simultaneous%20developments%20in%20the%20history%20of%20music%2C%20outlining%20the%20similar%20trends%20occurring%20in%20both%20of%20these%20areas.%20Part%20II%20will%20address%20the%20application%20of%20chaos%20theory%20to%20our%20understanding%
